Roses - Classic Portrait

Roses - Classic Portrait
Before it was too late I needed to/wanted to create a classic, formal portrait of the bouquet of roses my husband gave me for my birthday.  It's fun to take fast snapshots with my iPhone but I also want to be sure and respectfully take the time to create a "real" portrait with my digital SLR to honor the gift.

I ran downstairs to my newly created Vase Shelf that is slowly accumulating with an assortment of vases for floral portraits.  I thought for this portrait it would be fun to use the vase Karl chose when we were shopping for used vases on vacation in a shop in Wyoming.

I set up the flowers in the vase and ran out to the garden to pick some greens and purple sage stems for color.  It was quite a shock though when I ran water in the vase anticipating the vase filling up and holding the water to watch the water pour through in three different cracked spots.  After a short shriek, I laughed and poured out the water up to the level where there were cracks.

It wasn't a big deal because I moved all the flowers into a solid vase after the photos were over but I knew I had to move pretty fast before the combination of the hot afternoon temperature, sunshine and lack of water did major damage to  the flowers.

There just doesn't seem to ever be a photo session that has unlimited time to putz and fuss forever.  And maybe that's a good thing.
